What about the Griefers?
I have read the article and as much as I'm pleased to see that the growth seems to be wonderful and what not. But to be totally honest I have been to several locals that have been hit by the dreaded griefer's. One club even had photos to prove they were hit, which in turn because of this attack. Residents within this club had left except maybe 3-4 Residents, one of which was the owner of the astablishment [SIC].
I will have to say as much as the idea of removing the credit card, and age verification is a good idea. It also opens the door to becoming a griefer that much more, much less removing the PvP function from the help menu. For I have learned that Griefer's can now take "pot shots" at Residents from afar. I know this is a bad or touchy subject to put up but it is one that I think should be dealt with, Since it does create concern over the griefer, and minors.
And in terms of the minors, are there perental [SIC] controls to prevent minors from accessing mature locations? Because in a few days time...there can and will be lawsuits that could very well shut down Linden Labs and inevitably Second Life. This is another concern that should be addressed As Soon As Possible.
And that concludes my rant on the article. - Vince Kamenev
Keep Second Life Adults Only
I appreciate the desire to eliminate the credit card barrier for people, but I was dismayed to run into high school kids making fart jokes and agonizing over their SATs. And they were in front of the DelMar XXX sex motel at the time. Seemed inappropriate for them to be there. One of the best things about SL was the fact that teens were separated into their own area. If I keep running into kids everywhere, I will have to seriously consider whether or not I want to remain here.
Please, keep some areas for adults only. - Xanna Ziskey
Worried about Younger Residents
I have enjoyed 2L tremendously and appreciate all that you have done. It has been a great sociological experiment for me. I am a bit concerned about your decision to lift credit card restrictions for membership. Can this potentially open the door for younger groups to join? Would this invite the predators over that are hoping to seek the younger members? What about the many "adult" areas that are established in 2L? Are they going to be banned from this? Finally, if they have no credit card to be a member, how will they earn their Lindens? I realize there are legitimate ways to earn it but there are also "other" means of income.
I don't know if I am in the minority but I do know that if I have a conversation with someone in 2L, I would like to have the peace of mind of knowing that I will not be "framed" for interacting with minors.
Is there a link that already explains how this process will be working?
Thanks again for everything, - Hamilton Benavente
Griefers and Open Registration
While I think that the expansion of SL, and seeking to find ways to encourage that, is a wonderful thing, I do have some concerns about it. From my own personal perspective, a lot of the griefing I've been subject to has been from minors. Granted that took place when the CC check was in place, but my fear is that now it will be TOO easy for minors to sign up for a Main Grid account. Not only is there a notable lack in maturity with a majority (though I will admit not all) of the minors, the age verification was also a way to help protect THEM and LL from issues of older men and women becoming intimately involved with minors. It has been a very big issue in the courts as well as on the media as of late, with Yahoo, and MySpace being targeted. I would hate to see LL tied up in a lawsuit because a minor, or parent of a minor, felt that proper measures were not taken to protect them.
