HOME / GRIEFING & HARASSMENT
Griefing can take many forms in Second Life, from shooting, bombing and pushing to more subtle forms such as intimidation, spamming and harassment. The important thing to remember is to take any steps you can to protect yourself, use the land/region and estate tools, and to use the abuse system.
When suffering a griefing attack, these are the steps you should take..
- If you are on your own land, add the attackers name to the Ban List through the About Land window. You may also be able to right-click the attacker and choose Freeze from the pie menu that appears.
- If not your land, ask the landowner to ban the attacker from the land.
- If the weapons they are using are pushing you around or up into the air, right-click the ground or an object and Sit Here.
- File an Abuse Report from your Help menu at the top of your screen. Be sure to note the attackers name, and where the attack took place. Usually, if you choose Bumps, Pushes & Hits, the attackers name will be listed.
- If the attack continues, contact an on-shift liaison for help. You can find Linden staff using your Search window (click the Search button at the bottom and search for the surname Linden on the People tab).
Do not be tempted to fire back. Abuse reports are very important. If there are separate attacks or incidents, you should Abuse Report each successive attack as they happen. They provide us with information on the pattern of abuse.
Remember: It is not abuse if someone is shooting/bombing you and both of you are on combat enabled land.
If you are being harassed, similarly you should file Abuse Reports and ban them from your land. You can also silence another Resident through the Mute button on their Profile. If you have their calling card, or have them on your friends list - remove them from both. In the case of continued harassment, contact an in-world Liaison for help.
Note: The Community Standards sets out six behaviors, the "Big Six", that will result in suspension or, with repeated violations, expulsion from the Second Life Community. Violations of the Terms of Service can similarly result in a Resident being removed from Second Life.
