HOME / BUILDING / SELLING YOUR WORK
If you have completed work on something such as a piece of furniture, a vehicle or a house - you may decide you want to sell it to other residents. You could choose to build a store area on your own land or you could rent stall space in someone elses store or mall.
Here is a simple step by step guide to selling your work as a packaged sales box.
- In your Inventory, name the item, and decide what permissions you wish to set for it (right-click Properties on it). Are you happy for them to be able to create multiple copies from the one copy you sell them, or would you rather they only used the one. Do you want to stop them selling it on or giving it to others, or are you happier leaving the Resell/Give Away permission unticked.
- Most items are sold packaged, boxed up in a holding prim that is textured just as many sales items in a real store would be. You will need a graphic for your package, so take a Snapshot of your sale item using the Snapshot button at the bottom of the screen. It will cost you L$10 to save this snapshot to your inventory.
- Open up this Snapshot from your Photo Album folder, and use File menu.. Save Texture As.. to put it onto your hard drive.
- Now you can use a graphics tool to add name, branding, price and so on to the image before uploading your new image into Second Life (bitmap, jpeg or .tga format files only). Your new sales texture will be uploaded to your Textures folder. Uploading costs L$10.
- Rez a sales box, a blank cube on the ground. Add your sales texture to it and drag it to the right size.
- Right-click the sales box and choose Open to get to the Contents page for it.
- Now drag and drop the sale item itself from your Inventory to the contents. Anything you put into the contents will be given to anyone that buys it, so you might want to also add a landmark to your store, instruction notecards or any other information a buyer may need.
- As a quick check, right click each of the objects inside the Contents and choose Properties to make sure the Permissions set are what you want them to be.
- While still editing the sales box, on the General tab - give it a name and description.
- Click the For Sale tickbox, set a price for your work, then also click the Sell Contents tickbox as you want to sell the items inside the contents, not the whole box itself.
- You now have a sales box. You can place this in stores, where other residents will be able to right-click Buy it - to get the contents given to them. Your sales box will remain, so many people can buy repeatedly from you.
