HOME / BASIC HELP / USING THE SEARCH WINDOW

The Search button at the bottom of your screen is your shortcut to everything that is going on in-world, from Land sales, finding other Residents/groups and hunting out products. It includes Classified Ads posted by other people, Event listings, Places to visit and much more. Here is a run through of the tabs available on the Search window.

CLASSIFIEDS

Classified ads are posted by other Residents to advertise their products and services through their Profile page. They will then be listed in the Search window, Classifieds tab. The search field lets you hunt for specific things, and you can use the Category Dropdown Menu to limit your search to particular subject areas such as Shopping or Property Rentals.

When you highlight a selection from the list, details appear on the right and you may then teleport to the location you have selected by hitting the Teleport button provided.

EVENTS

Events are held by Residents at all hours of the day and night. Please remember that the times listed in the Events window are based on in-world time (Second Life Time/SLT or Pacific Standard Time/PST).

You can search events by date, time and category by using the date buttons which will scroll you through dates and times or with the Category Dropdown Menu. You may also choose to use the Mature filter (the tickbox on the right hand side of the events tab) if you would like to include mature events in your search. If you are looking for a particular event that you know of, enter the name of it in the name/desc search box

Hit the search button to bring up a list of events. There are many events that take place every day. You can scroll through them by hitting the next button at the bottom of the events tab window

Left click an event from the list and then chose teleport from the right hand side of the window to teleport directly to the location where the event is being held.

POPULAR PLACES

The popular places list shows the top scoring attractions by traffic, which is a measure of the proportion of their in-world time that other Residents have chosen to spend there. Traffic does not measure the length of time people spend there, so one avatar can assign as much dwell in five minutes as they can in five hours.

How Traffic Works.

Imagine that every Resident has one point of traffic they can bestow each day. For their presence somewhere to count, they must be at that location for at least five minutes. So if a Resident logs in for five minutes and stays on a parcel of land for that time before then logging out, that parcel earns one point - because they spent all of their in-world time there.

Now lets say the next day the same Resident logs in and spends one hour in one place, and one hour in another place, then logs out. Each parcel they spend time on will get half of the traffic, so each will earn 0.5 points. So even though the Resident spent far more time in each location - they earn less dwell than the place she spent five minutes at the previous day.

Finally, on the third day - they log in and spend eight hours in one place, and two hours somewhere different. The first venue will get 0.8 points, and the latter will get 0.2 point of traffic.

So - the traffic generated by a Resident has nothing to do with the length of time they spend somewhere. It is based on the proportion of their in-world time they spend somewhere.

LAND SALES

You can filter your land sales search by using the Dropdown Menu in the top left hand corner of the land sales tab. You can choose from Auction land, and land For Sale on the Mainland and Estates. Auction land lists parcels that are being made available by Linden Lab through the Auction pages of the website. For Sale land lists all parcels in-world that are set For Sale, such as any that other Residents are selling.

In addition, you can also restrict your search by price and/or by square meter parcel size by selecting the white tickboxes and entering a price or size of land you are looking for.

Hit the search button in the land sales window and it will bring up a list of land sales that fit your criteria.

You can scroll through the list and left click on a land sale that interests you, then Teleport to the location by hitting the teleport button on the right hand side of the land sales tab

PLACES

The Places tab lists land parcels where the land owner has chosen to pay the small fee per week to list their parcel in this way - through the About Land screen. It will cover a wide range of locations from stores and clubs through to attractions and meeting places. Be sure you click the Mature tickbox if you would like your search to include mature places.

The places that are listed here, have been categorized by the landowners into various categories such as Gathering Place and Store. Use the dropdown to filter your search by these categories.

Hit the Search button and select a place from the list

PEOPLE

The people tab is where you can search for other Residents, and Linden staff. Everyone with a current, active account is listed here.

Use the Online tickbox if you only wish to search for people who are currently in-world.

Hit the Search button and a list of people matching the name you entered in your search will appear.

Left clicking on a name from the list will show their profile window on the right hand side.

You can drop Inventory items to that person by dragging them onto that Profile area if you wish to, you can also Pay them money, send them an Instant Message or invite them to teleport to you. If you need to, you can also Mute them - so that you will no longer hear chat or IM text from them.

GROUPS

The Group tab lists all those active groups that are not set up as Private ones by their officers. When you select one, the founder and membership is listed so that you can get in touch with them about joining if you wished to. In addition you can see the group charter, a description of the group and a statement about what the group stands for.

ALL

The All tab provides a way to search across all of the other tabs in one go.

You can enter criteria for your search by entering a keyword or name in the search box and hitting the Search button.
