HOME / BASIC HELP / YOUR INVENTORY

Your Inventory is your treasure chest. It holds everything that you build, own, and need. There is no limit to what you can store in here, but extremely large inventories can cause slow down your client when loading. At the top level there are two folders:

  1. Library - Contains objects, clothing, outfits, textures, and more default goodies provided by Linden Lab
  2. My Inventory - Where you keep everything that's yours.

To open your Inventory window, click the Inventory button in the lower-right corner of the screen, or press Ctrl-I. Your Inventory's set up like a filing cabinet, with folders and files. You can create additional folders using Create > New Folder, and can move folders inside other folders to help organize things as you gather more and more stuff, you can delete items--which sends them to your Trash (they can be restored from there if you mistakenly delete something), and you can copy or move objects around so long as you have the necessary permissions.

Take some time to look at the names of all the folders in your Inventory, then go ahead and open them up.

Note: Clicking the white triangle next to a folder will open and close it. An open folder will have a downwards-pointing triangle. You can also open a folder by double-clicking it.

THE MAIN INVENTORY FOLDERS

Animations
This is where you can keep all your custom poses and animations.

Body Parts
Here's a place to store different body parts. All your avatar settings, such as head shape, leg length, etc. can be saved and organized--giving you an easy way to apply different looks to yourself at any time. In your Inventory, anytime a body part's currently being worn by your avatar, it'll appear in bold text. Double-click a body part, or drag it onto your avatar to wear it.

Calling Cards
Calling cards provide a quick contact list of Residents you've met and may want to get in touch with later. Double-click on a calling card to bring up that person's profile. Calling Cards can be given and received in a couple ways: right-click their avatar and select More > Give Card from the pie menu, or right-click them and Add Friend. This will exchange calling cards, and also add them to your Friends list, which can be seen by clicking the button on the Toolbar.

Clothing
This folder stores your clothing and whole outfits, so you can change your avatar's looks as often as you like. Outfits can even include body parts, allowing for a complete makeover of your avatar when you change. Clothes you're currently wearing are shown in bold text.

Gestures
Here's where we keep your Gestures: combinations of animations, sounds, and text chat that can be triggered as a single action. In the Library, you'll find a number of these ready to play with such as "/laugh", "/smile", and "/wave". Double-click a Gesture and press Preview to play it!

Landmarks
This folder holds all your landmarks, including the ones you create yourself. A landmark's essentially a three-dimensional bookmark, easy access to an exact location in-world. For example, if you find a great store you want to revisit later, use World menu > Create Landmark Here. A new landmark will appear in your Landmark folder, and you'll also be able to directly teleport to it from the Landmark pop-up menu in your World Map window.

Lost And Found
When objects go off-world, like out-of-control vehicles, the system will tidy up and return these objects to your Lost And Found folder. Other stuff which gets returned to you, like no-copy items left in a Linden sandbox when it gets wiped, will also be found here.

Note Cards
This folder holds notecards, which are text clippings used for everything from instruction manuals to party invites to short stories. If you need to record some information for later, just use Create > New Notecard in your Inventory window and type or paste the text in.

Objects
Likely one of your busiest folders, the Objects folder contains everything from complete castles to vehicles to weapons. Prim-based content that you make or acquire in-world will usually end up here, unless they've been set to arrive in a folder of their own.

Photo Album
This is where your Second Life snapshots go. You can take a photo by clicking the Snapshot button on the Toolbar (Ctrl-Shift-S).

Scripts
Scripts from this folder can be inserted in an object's contents to make it more interactive. For instance, you can use a Door script to make the door to your house open and close when clicked. You can write your own scripts, or use scripts created by others and modify them.

Sounds
Holds sounds that you can play or include in avatar Gestures. You can even upload your own sounds to your Inventory from the main File menu.

Textures
This folder contains graphics you can use to decorate your walls, to add flair to anything you build, and even create new clothes. When you upload textures from the main File menu, this is where they end up. Note that technically, photos and textures are interchangeable: their icons are different and they're uploaded in different ways (photos are in-world snapshots while textures come from external media), but they can be used for the same things.

Trash
This is where everything you delete from your Inventory is preserved until you empty the Trash. It's a safety feature so you can fish out things before they're gone for good! If you're sure you want to permanently empty the Trash, right-click it and select Empty Trash, or in the Inventory window, use File menu > Empty Trash.

MORE ABOUT INVENTORY

Most of the contents of your inventory can be used simply by double clicking on them. However, sometimes sellers sell you their product in a box. To get the item you purchased, you will need to open the box and move it's contents into your inventory.

  • Drag-and-drop the container that you purchased from your inventory and drop it on the ground.
    • Note: You will have to be in an area that allows you to build objects, such as a sandbox (in the regions Cordova or Morris), or your own property, or property of a friend.
  • Right-click on the container, and select "Open" from the pie menu. The box will open and you will be given a list of the Object's contents.
  • Select the "Copy to Inventory" button to copy over the objects into your inventory.
  • Select the "Copy and Wear" button to wear clothing or other wearable objects from inside the box.

In addition to sorting items into folders, there are advanced controls such as an "inbox" and filters to help you organize your Inventory even better. Read more about the Inventory Inbox and become the master of your own inventory!
