HOME / AVATAR CUSTOMIZATION / ATTACHMENTS
An attachment is an object made form one or more prims that you wear on your avatar. It can appear to be something external like a briefcase in your hand or a silly hat on your head, or it can look more integrated, like hair made out of prims or perhaps even a furry paw. Wherever you go, your attachments go with you, anchored to the point on your body that you have attached it to. Other Residents will see you wearing your attachments, and over time you'll build up a collection to personalize yourself with.
There are a number of attach points around the body, and each point can only have one object attached to it - making for a grand total of 30 body and 8 HUD (Heads-Up Display) attachments.
ATTACHING AN OBJECT
Any single object you own can be attached, even those that weren't designed to be. This allows for great creative leeway, as well as an awkward silence when you accidentally wear a house on your head.
There are several ways to attach something to yourself..
- Right-click an object in your inventory and choose Wear. If you want to specify the attachment spot, select Attach To and pick any one. Existing attachments you're already wearing will be listed in brackets.
- Alternatively, right-click an object you own that's already rezzed in-world and select More.. Wear, Attach.. and Attach HUD..
- From the Edit menu, choose Attach Object.
If you're attaching an object to a specific point with an existing attachment for the first time, you'll get a message asking if you want to replace it.
DETACHING AN OBJECT
Once more there are several ways to remove attachments from your avatar..
- Right-click a worn object in your inventory and Detach From Yourself. Worn objects will have the word (worn) written beside them, so searching your Inventory for the word 'worn' is a quick way to find out what you have attached.
- From your Edit menu, choose Detach Object..
- Right-click on the object itself, on your avatar and choose Detach.
Note: While not considered attachments, similar principles apply to the right-clicking of clothing in your inventory, although it will say 'Take Off' instead of 'Detach From Yourself'. Body parts (Shape, Skin, Hair, Eyes) cannot be removed. To change them, double-click on another item of the same type in your inventory.
KNOWING WHAT IS ALREADY ATTACHED..
It's useful to have an easy summary of all your attachments.
- A quick but not obvious way to do this is to search your inventory for the text '(worn)' as any items you have on will be marked with this text in your inventory.
- You can also go to your Edit menu and select Attach Object to see the list.
EDITING ATTACHMENTS
Editing attachments is done using the same familiar tools used to build in Second Life. Whilst worn, you can right-click the object and choose Edit, to then use the drag arrows, rotate and so on - to position the item as you wish. The attach point it is using may limit how far you can move the item. Since avatars come in all shapes and sizes, adjusting something like the fit of a necklace is best done when it's already attached. Some Residents have also made posing stands available in-world to put an avatar into a neutral position for more precise adjustments. This is especially useful when customizing something complex, such as a suit of armor.
However, there are several things to be aware of..
- If you right-click an attachment on your avatar and Edit it, you won't see general info such as its name and permissions. You can still right-click the attachment in your inventory and select Properties to view this.
- You can't link or unlink prims on an attached object. If you need to do this, right-click the attachment and Drop it so you can edit it on the ground as you normally would. Multiple objects can't be attached to a single point so make sure you link everything you want, then attach as one object.
- An attachment will be automatically saved to attach to the last point you had it attached to. Its relative positioning, done by right-clicking on it, Edit, and then moving the arrows, will also be saved.
IMPORTANT: If an attachment object is copyable, make a backup before editing, just in case your edits to the positioning go wrong. To do this, right-click it in your inventory, select Copy, and right-click it again and select Paste. If the object is also modifiable, give it a different name. For example, 'hair' becomes 'hair (BACKUP)'. This allows you to experiment freely without fear of messing things up.
